Grading Pattern: YUL GOK – 38 Moves

YUL GOK Interpretation
Yul Gok is the pseudonym of the great philosopher and scholar Yi I (1536 – 1584) nicknamed the Confucius of Korea.
The 38 movements of the pattern refer to his birthplace 38 degrees latitude and the diagram represents scholar.

3 STEP SEMI FREE SPARRING – Ban Jayoo Matsoki
3 step semi free sparring is designed as an intermediate step between set sparring and free sparring. It involves three consecutive attacks and three blocks or evasions, plus a counter attack. 3 step semi free sparring should not be rushed, the secret is reaction force and quick, intelligent movements.  This is where the true art of sparring is learnt.The Attacker always starts in Left or Right L Stance, Middle Section Forearm Guarding Block.
The Defender always starts in  Parallel Ready Stance.
Intermediate Semi Free Sparring
Attack
– Any Three of the Following Kicks. Front Kick, Side Kick, Turning Kick, Reverse Side Kick.
Kicking with the rear leg first, alternating legs. Defence – Any Block suitable for each individual kick.
Counter – Any hand attack.
FREE SPARRING – Jayoo Matsoki
Semi contact free sparring, demonstrating attack and defence techniques. Sparring must be done in a controlled manner.A full set of TAGB approved sparring equipment must be worn.
PROCEDURE FOR TWO STEP SPARRING 1-4 ( IBO MATSOKI )
  1. Face each other in Attention Stance.
  2. The person to attack makes a measure punch to opponents chest. Then returns to Attention Stance
  3. On command Junbi the person attacking takes his/her right leg back into “L” Stance, making forearm guarding block and shouts KI-AP to show he/she is ready to attack. The defender on the same command makes normal Parallel Ready Stance  and when ready to defend shouts KI-AP.
  4. Attacker steps forward twice making the stated attacks. You MUST take your time.
  5. Defender, when blocking you MUST use the correct part of the arm(s) and your other fist comes back to the hip if applicable. When you do your counter you shout KI-AP to show you have finished.
  6. When the person who has been defending has finished, the attacker steps back into Ready Stance, the defender steps forward into Ready Stance. Reverse the roles and start again.
